Age & State Restrictions

Last updated July 28, 2026

Before you order, check this page. It lists the minimum age for every category we sell and every state and locality we cannot ship ammunition or magazines to. If your address is on this list, we will not be able to complete the order.

Minimum age

You must meet these ages to buy

  • You must be at least 18 years old to purchase a rifle, a shotgun, or ammunition intended for a rifle or shotgun.
  • You must be at least 21 years old to purchase a handgun or ammunition intended for a handgun.
  • Some states set a higher minimum age than federal law. Where state law is stricter, state law controls and we follow it.
  • We verify age with a valid government-issued photo ID at the time of transfer. Orders that cannot be age-verified are cancelled and refunded.

In short: 18 for long guns and long-gun ammunition, 21 for handguns and handgun ammunition, and older wherever your state says so. We ask you to confirm your age before you submit an inquiry, and we verify it with photo ID at transfer. There are no exceptions and we do not make judgment calls on this.

States we will not ship ammunition to

We do not ship ammunition to any address in the following states. Orders placed to these addresses are cancelled and refunded in full.

  • CaliforniaNo ammunition

California requires ammunition to be delivered to a licensed California ammunition vendor and transferred face-to-face after a state background check. We do not ship ammunition into California.

  • District of ColumbiaNo ammunition

Ammunition may generally be possessed only by registered firearm owners in the District. We do not ship ammunition to Washington, D.C.

  • HawaiiNo ammunition

Hawaii requires a permit to acquire ammunition and restricts mail delivery. We do not ship ammunition to Hawaii.

  • MassachusettsNo ammunition

Massachusetts requires a valid FID card or License to Carry and imposes additional dealer requirements. We do not ship ammunition to Massachusetts.

  • New YorkNo ammunition

New York requires ammunition sales to go through a licensed dealer or registered seller with a state background check. We do not ship ammunition into New York, including New York City.

States where ammunition requires a permit

We can ship ammunition to these states, but only after you send us a legible copy of the permit or licence your state requires. Nothing ships until we have it and have confirmed it is current.

  • ConnecticutDocumentation required

We ship ammunition to Connecticut only after we receive a copy of a valid Connecticut permit or eligibility certificate.

  • IllinoisDocumentation required

Illinois requires a valid FOID card. We ship ammunition only after we receive a copy of the buyer's FOID card, and never to Chicago or Cook County.

  • New JerseyDocumentation required

Handgun ammunition requires a New Jersey Firearms Purchaser Identification Card, and hollow-point ammunition is restricted. We ship to New Jersey only after we receive the required documentation.

Cities and counties we will not ship to

Some local ordinances are stricter than the state around them. We do not ship ammunition or magazines to:

  • New York City, New York
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Cook County, Illinois
  • Los Angeles County, California
  • Boston, Massachusetts

This list is not exhaustive. If your city or county restricts something you have ordered, we will contact you rather than ship it.

Magazine capacity limits

We will not ship a magazine that exceeds the capacity limit in your state. Where a product page lists a standard-capacity magazine, orders to these states are filled with a compliant magazine where one exists, or cancelled and refunded where one does not.

Firearms

Firearms are never shipped to an unlicensed individual in any state. Every firearm is either picked up at our counter or shipped to a Federal Firearms Licensee you choose, and the transfer is completed by that dealer under ATF Form 4473 with a NICS background check. See the FFL & ATF Compliance page for how that works.

Some states restrict specific firearm configurations, features, or models outright. If your state prohibits an item you have asked about, we will tell you before taking any payment.

Air, sea, and territories

Carriers do not accept ammunition for air transport. That means we cannot ship ammunition to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or other U.S. territories that require air or ocean freight, regardless of what state law allows. We do not ship outside the United States, and we neither export nor import.

Keeping this current

It is still your responsibility

Firearm and ammunition law changes constantly, and city and county ordinances can be stricter than the state list above. We maintain this page in good faith and update it as we learn of changes, but you are responsible for knowing what is legal where you live. If we are wrong about your jurisdiction, tell us — we would rather cancel an order than break the law.
